Title: Work experience
Size: 13in x 13in Medium: Mix Media Date: 07/04/19 |
Work experience is based on my inspirations, "Odyssey," by Jack Whitten and "Cog Tree." My Piece is inspired by craftsmanship and the formal elements of shape, texture, balance and repetition which both inspirations poses. My piece is a collaboration of work experience and accomplishment in construction in which I was apart of this summer were many projects were made. The model of the drill and what it's made of (work screws) represents these new work experiences and accomplishment I went on gathering in construction for the summer.

There are two inspirations with different artist that influenced the creation of my piece and both are Mixed Media works. The first inspiration is called, "Odyssey," by Jack Whitten and the second inspiration was a cog art called, "Cog Tree," with not necessary an artist behind it. What really attracted me to these artworks was their craftsmanship and the formal elements of shape, texture, balance and repetition. "Odyssey," by Jack Whitten was the first inspiration that influenced my work. "Odyssey," was an art work that took over 5 decades to complete, this influenced my work as both mine and "Odyssey," represent experience. What also influenced my work was the artworks balance, everything on it looks and feels like it belongs, with the wood base to the metal nails. Shape and texture influenced my work as well, "Odyssey," holds organic shapes with ruff and smooth texture. "Cog Tree," the second inspiration that influenced my work. "Cog Tree," is cog art meaning cog defines as an instrumental part of the whole. What attracted me to this cog art was just like "Odyssey," it holds good craftsmanship, but also the formal elements of repetition, shape and balance. "Cog Tree," holds a great balance in the many shapes it hold. It also holds repetition in those shapes in which give it balance. Those components influenced my work. |
Planning/Experimentation
For my planning sketches I made three different sketches. The fist sketch is a more realistic sketch of a drill and this sketch was to give me an idea of how the final thing with look like. The second sketch in also a sketch of a drill but this sketch was just a sketch of just lines to simulate the screws I will use. The final sketch is a drawing of a different type of drill I would end up using. This sketch is to give me an Idea of how I would create my piece. The drawing is a sketch of a drill with marks or lines in which those represent the screws.

In my experiments throughout creating my piece, I experimented with different types of patterns. As you can see in the first photo I did positioned the screws in a aligned way were each screw was right next to each other in order. On the second photo I aligned the screws in a way were they flow with the curves and other positions to get that image of my planning sketch.

Process
|
The very first step to crating my piece was to find the material in which I would be using to create my work out of. I ended up using wood for the base of my work as wood is strong and sturdy in which can support hot glue from the glue gun. I used screws for the image because the screws represent the theme of my piece. To put the piece together I used a hot glue gun. After gathering the material I first drew a straight line across the wood base at the bottom to mark were I need to start adding the screw and to keep everything straight. I then could start adding the screws. The process for adding screws I added a small line of glue just big enough as the screws. Then I added the screws. That was the process for adding all of the screws. I started from bottom to top and slowly started to build a model of a drill. The bottom is 4 inch screws wide and as I continued I decreased the amount of screws to build the handle of the drill towards the middle. As I got to the top of the drill head I had to make the head of the drill wider. As I got to the middle and top I screws didn't go from left to right, this was because as I got to the middle it got less wide so the only way for the screws to fit and look proper was to face them bottom to top. This was the case as I got to the top. I wet with the flow so were the screws curve this was to simulate the model. After completing the model this was just the first layer of the model. I added a second layer of screws to the model to fill in the blanks at you could see. This was the same process as I used the create the first layer. After adding the second layer with a piece of blue tape I covered my piece and the took it off after a bit. This was to remove any and as much of the excess glue strings. The final step was to cut the excess wood to make the wood base a reasonable size. I used a saw to remove the excess wood. The I cleared off any debris. And lastly I sanded the edges of the wood base. |
Critique
There were many similarities and differences between my work and "Odyssey," by Jack Whitten. A similarity between both works would be that both works are collages. My piece is a collage of screws that represent my new work experience and accomplishment in construction in which I was apart of many projects. While "Odyssey," is a collage of many things in Whitten life over a 5 decade lifespan. A difference between both artworks would be scale and time. My piece was created over a summer break while "Odyssey," was created over a 5 decade life span. for scale "Odyssey," is big while mine is about two average texts books.

There were also similarities between my piece and "Cog Tree,." A similarity between both artworks would be the formal elements of balance and pattern. My piece holds balance and pattern in the screws but the color of the screws and were they were positioned. "Cog Tree," has the same were the components in which it is made from hold balance and pattern.
A difference would be the median were my piece is a sort of a collage and "Cog Tree," is a sculpture were many components together create a whole. |
Reflection
When creating this piece there was many challenges and struggles but I pushed through them to create my piece work experience.
Through the process of creating my piece I learned new things through struggles and experiments. Firstly I learned how to work more professional with a hot glue gun because in this piece I avoided leaving big piles of glue. Secondly I had to be patient when creating this piece because it was a one step process meaning I had to put each screw one by one. If I were to start all over and recreate my piece I would of used bigger and more screws with black as the primary color instead of grey. Overall the process of this piece was a great leaning experience and fun to make.
